Chapter 4335 Body of Steel (Forty)
Behind the microscope lens, the eyeball rotates continuously. The slightest trembling of tiny particles beneath the slide is clearly visible. The figure standing at the lab bench straightens up, picks up a test tube, and adds a drop of solution. Instantly, a puff of white smoke rises from the slide. The figure in front of the microscope smiles.
He took another petri dish from the cabinet behind him, and the moment he dropped the solution into it, the substance inside turned a vibrant purplish-red. Something seemed to have suddenly come alive. He picked up the petri dish, placed it under the light, and looked at the lively tiny spores, a wicked but smug expression on his face.
In a dark forest, a tall figure was fleeing for his life. His armor was already tattered, and he was now struggling to move forward through the tall bushes.
The flashlight beam flashed, and he lunged forward, dodging two bullets. But as the blood seeped from his chest and flowed onto the ground, it glowed with a faint fluorescent green under the light, looking strange and eerie.
He struggled, but could no longer get up. Shards of his broken helmet slashed his face, leaving bloody gashes. He clenched his fists, his eyes wide with despair, watching helplessly as countless figures in protective suits and carrying rifles drew ever closer.
With a click, the lights switched on, illuminating the laboratory table in the center of the room. Medical personnel, fully equipped with protective gear, stood behind the observation window outside the room. Two generals stood in the doorway, discussing something.
"Inject him with some more gemstone powder solution. We absolutely cannot afford any more mishaps. The first living extraterrestrial research subject is the most valuable specimen; it could bring us unimaginable profits. Keep a close eye on him, understand?"
"Don't worry, sir. We'll treat him well."
The officer opened the door and went out, and another person pushed the door open and came in. They said something to each other, and then the two of them went out together.
Suddenly, the figure on the lab table opened his eyes. He was bound to the table, with a fluorescent green sphere embedded in the center of each of the locks binding his hands and feet. Half of the sphere was stuck in his flesh, rendering him powerless and unable to move.
He could only stare wide-eyed at the laboratory ceiling, regretting his actions after leaving the spaceship, and at the same time, developing a deep loathing for the human race.
Amidst the rising dust, fully armed Zod landed on an unnamed mountain range. Thanks to his excellent stamina and unwavering will, he walked for two whole days until he reached a populated area.
He saw a building and went inside. But the shop assistant screamed when she saw his attire and pressed the alarm on the counter. Before Zod could react, two policemen cornered him.
Zod reached out and fired a shell, sending them flying. But then, even more police cars arrived. Zod had to find a way to escape; his legs couldn't outrun the cars, so he had to steal a police car. But because of his poor driving skills, he crashed into the river.
However, taking this opportunity, Zod escaped the police pursuit. He realized that his disguise wouldn't allow him to move freely on Earth; it would definitely attract attention. Human firearms could harm him, and he couldn't afford to take it head-on.
After much hesitation, Zod decided to remove his equipment. He had no choice but to take a gamble; the basic survival resources on Earth weren't toxic to him. The good news was that he was right; he didn't die from inhaling air or being exposed to sunlight. The bad news was that he also experienced adverse reactions.
He felt dizzy, nauseous, and vomiting. It wasn't until he was hiding in the forest that he gently touched a tree, which snapped in half. Zod realized that he, too, had awakened superpowers.
Because of his human-like appearance and superpowers, Zod finally managed to enter the city. He wanted to investigate the military base, unaware that he had already been targeted by the military.
Lying on the operating table, Zod, his consciousness fading, recalled the scene: the collapsing high-rise, the raging fire, the crying child. He walked through the crowd, but finally stopped because of that innocent cry.
A little boy, barely taller than the railing, stood on the balcony of a building billowing with thick smoke. Everyone covered their mouths and noses and ran outside, but when the boy screamed, Zod couldn't help but turn back.
The child was too small, probably not even as tall as his knee. He could do nothing but wail. So innocent, so naive. During the long years of exile in the Phantom Zone, the cold, ruthless military code, once implanted in his genes and repeatedly emphasized, was shaken by his innate thirst for life.
He shouldn't waver. Zod clenched his fists. This was a trap for him. As he flew into the air, intending to pick up the boy, a special sniper bullet pierced his chest, followed by a large net. They had been waiting for this moment for a long time.
As he fell, Zod clearly saw that the raging fire behind the little boy was real. The smoke choked him, turning his crying and coughing into painful groans. The soldiers who rushed out from behind him didn't even glance at the small figure, their eyes fixed on him as he fell, their gazes filled with cold indifference.
Humans were willing to sacrifice their own offspring without any scruples to capture him. He had underestimated humanity's limits. Zod closed his eyes, his resentment reaching its peak. How dare they, how dare such a race occupy this planet? They didn't deserve it!
With a creak, the door was pushed open. Someone came in and injected him with something, making him feel even weaker. Then he was wheeled out. He went from here to there, from there to here, going back and forth countless times. He felt a chill that almost froze him. Then, he felt his chest being ripped open.
By this time, Zod could barely feel any pain. The coldness numbed him, and the weakness made him unable to think. He began to teeter on the edge of life and death, and the past flashed through his mind like a dream.
Suddenly, the door was pushed open. This time, the footsteps weren't as heavy as before, and the person wasn't wearing boots but leather shoes. They didn't seem to have received professional training and didn't sound like a soldier.
This strangeness brought Zod to his senses for a moment. He vaguely sensed two figures standing in the doorway talking. For some reason, Zod found he could understand English.
“Mr. Luther, I think you should understand that you got this opportunity because you are indeed a professional. And we are exactly lacking people like you to conduct research on our valuable experimental materials. However, I also advise you not to try anything funny. Just hand over the data obediently, or else…”
"Don't worry, I know the rules. Such unique experimental materials are extremely valuable to any researcher, and I wouldn't damage them. Besides, you've already searched me, and I'm not carrying any dangerous items, am I?"
"That would be for the best. You only have two hours. Wait for good news."
The door slammed shut. Lex Luthor, standing by the door, gave a mocking smile: "What a bunch of idiots. The military found some moronic scientists who couldn't even get basic data right, and in the end they still had to come after them."
“Perfect timing. I haven’t gotten revenge yet for breaking into Luther Mansion and stealing the gem.” Luther glanced down at the ring on his hand, the purplish-red gem shimmering with an eerie light.
Itching, an excruciating itch. Some kind of power was erupting from within the body, as if the internal organs were about to break free of the body's constraints. The figure on the lab table jerked upwards, letting out a painful howl, veins bulging on the back of the hand.
Grayish keratin crawled up his arms, then his shoulders, the sides of his neck, and finally below his eyes. Zod's eyes were wide open in anger, but his last shred of reason was destroyed by the intense pain and excitement emanating from within his body.
He let out a superhuman roar, and with a sudden burst of strength, the restraints snapped open. Sharp alarms blared, medical personnel scrambled to escape, and soldiers stormed in, guns at the ready.
A tall, spiked monster leaped off the lab table and bit the neck of the leading soldier.
"Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah!!!!"
boom! boom! boom!
The flashes of gunfire did not stop this behemoth. Its figure continued to grow larger until it broke through the ceiling, and then with a single punch, it turned everyone into mincemeat.
With another roar, he smashed through the base wall and fled towards the exit of the passage. Countless soldiers, weapons at their disposal, tried to stop him, but bullets couldn't pierce his rock-solid skin. Spikes pierced their throats, and his feet snapped their spines. A colossal creature leaped from the ground, standing on the sun-drenched earth, its pupils filled with a crazed, bloodthirsty red.
The sharp roar of fighter jets flashed overhead. The noise of helicopter rotors and sirens blared from both sides. The door of a police car opened, and a middle-aged man in a police uniform stepped out. Looking at the monster that resembled a mountain giant on the endless plain, he couldn't help but curse, "Shit."
boom! ! ! ! !
A huge boulder, thrown out of the way, crashed into the center of the convoy. Everyone covered their heads and ran out. The fighter pilots in the sky glanced down, but the sonic boom of the giant's roar disrupted the airflow, and the fighter jets almost instantly went out of control, plummeting straight down.
Before the helicopter could dodge, the monster suddenly leaped up, floated in mid-air, and punched the helicopter into a firework.
The people in the other helicopter quickly parachuted out, and after landing, they frantically pulled out their walkie-talkies and roared, "He can fly! He's flying towards the city!! Stop him!!!"
