Chapter 1078 - 1049: Someone Else
Chapter 1049: Others Involved
A silver car sped down the street, splashing rainwater as it went. It ignored the traffic lights overhead and the pouring rain, perhaps too confident in the driver’s skills. The car reached Caesar Street in record time without incident, using advanced parking techniques to stop just ten centimeters from Meisai. The sharp screech of brakes startled the person who was just about to light a cigarette, and the untasted cigarette fell into the wet ground, useless.
"Oh, heavens!" Meisai exclaimed as he looked at the person exiting the car. Only ten minutes had passed since he made the call, before he could even light the cigarette, and now the young man he struggled to describe stood before him. "Mr. Xiao, did you fly here?" At this moment, Meisai worried if he would receive a complaint call from traffic police tomorrow.
"Where is Yelü Shou?" Xiao Lin didn’t seem to be in the mood for jokes. The location Meisai chose was poor, leaving Xiao Lin half-soaked in rainwater.
"Mr. Xiao, please don’t rush. The situation isn’t as severe as it sounds. Your friend only suffered minor injuries, though I suspect another’s condition is quite serious," Meisai said. A strange light flashed in Xiao Lin’s dark eyes, not relieved by Yelü Shou’s condition but doubtful of the Director’s motives. Smartly, he chose silence, refraining from questions or comments on the current situation.
Meisai found Xiao Lin’s silence boring. He lit another cigarette without further ado, opened an umbrella, and walked toward the inside of Caesar Street. "Before your doubts arise, let me add, this is a personal act. I want you to owe me a favor. Whether you accept this obligation is up to you."
Once inside Caesar Street, Xiao Lin had a premonition of their destination. Perhaps upon hearing Caesar Street, he should have guessed the situation.
"What’s your relationship with Tang?" Xiao Lin finally spoke as Meisai prepared to push open the door.
"Like father and son!"
Inside! The dry air nearly made one want to exhale heavily before taking the next breath. The humidifier was at maximum but couldn’t clear the bloody scent. Yelü Shou seemed dazed upon seeing Xiao Lin, unable to recover from the surprise evident on his face, staring at the young boy seated on a bench, biting a lollipop. Upon seeing Meisai, the boy leaped over and snuggled his head against Meisai’s damp clothes.
On the liberated dining table lay a bloody figure. Yelü Shou indicated toward the person with his mouth. He didn’t look well himself but managed to sit, which relieved Xiao Lin from worrying. Hence, he approached the person.
"A street performer?" An all-too-familiar face caked in paint, though recognizable by facial shape, resembling a bag of bones, appeared gravely wounded, barely clinging to life. "Meisai, is this the individual for whom you wish to sell me a favor?"
Xiao Lin cautiously directed the wounded toward Meisai, unable to discern any link between them. "I want to tell you a fact. This person might be the murderer who killed Wang Zhantian. I saw him emerge from the alley, and later Wang Zhantian was brutally murdered."
"He’s not the killer!" Tang shouted, and each sound from his mouth gave Xiao Lin a headache. "Meisai, tell him he’s not the killer!"
"I believe someone else killed Wang Zhantian. You saw him emerge from the alley, but that’s a fact. To learn the truth, let’s try saving him!" Meisai only patted Tang’s head, which made Xiao Lin uncomfortable.
"Director Meisai seems well aware of my identity."
"With a military doctor renowned in both legitimate and underground circles, even if I didn’t seek, it’s easily known. Whether to resuscitate him depends on the military doctor’s whim."
"This place isn’t suited for surgery; he doesn’t seem optimistic. If we go to a hospital, there’s no favor to sell."
"Surgery requires a sterile room. Tang should meet your needs. Please help me move him out together, military doctor."
"Can you really save him?" Tang questioned, distrustful, while closing one end of the dining room door.
"If he claims it can’t be done, survival is bleak." While speaking, the wounded was carried onto a three-seat sofa.
Closing the other door turned the dining space into a sealed room. "Sterilization takes about ten minutes, can you wait?" Tang asked, adjusting a remote control, while Xiao Lin wasn’t surprised at the creation of a sterile room in this cramped space, recalling even stranger modifications like those at Zimu Brothers Car Workshop, where safety systems originated from this child’s hands.
"I’ll try!" Xiao Lin gauged the injured’s wounds. Yelü Shou hadn’t inflicted severe wounds; the fatal strike penetrated the abdomen, impacting organs and escalating blood flow. After examining the rudimentary remedies, Xiao Lin furrowed his brow. "Truth be told, even with a sterile room, it lacks equipment and personnel for coordination. While minor organ rupture is manageable, it’s beyond my capacity if complications arise."
"Do you still recommend relocating and acquiring necessary medical personnel?" Meisai queried Xiao Lin’s limits.
"That appears necessary. The wounds inflicted by Shou don’t cause shock symptoms; if he’s unconscious, other factors might be involved. Without adequate equipment and personnel, I can only treat the wounds, not ensure consciousness."
"OK! I’ll contact a suitable location; please administer initial treatment!" Hesitating slightly, Meisai finally resolved.
With clean hands, Xiao Lin applied pressure to the patient’s wounds. Blood oozed from the incision—a gash of nearly twenty centimeters. Under non-sterile conditions, Xiao Lin decisively blocked critical points, temporarily closing acupuncture to impede blood flow. Nevertheless, the patient’s breathing grew weaker.
"Military doctor, the nearest location requires a ten-minute drive. Can he manage?" Meisai asked.
"Keep him lying as flat as possible!"
