Chapter 104 Wonder Woman's Funeral
Chapter 104 Wonder Woman's Funeral
Chapter 104 Wonder Woman's Funeral
Wonder Woman is holding a unique funeral on Paradise Island.
It is unique because the person buried in this funeral is "herself".
Wonder Woman from another universe.
Organizing her own funeral was far more difficult than Diana had imagined.
The body of the Amazon princess from another world has been prepared by the priests of the Amazons, who have smeared her entire body with olive oil from Greece and placed her in the coffin with her head facing west.
In Greek tradition, when a respected person dies, someone must read a eulogy, listing her good deeds for all to remember.
Diana glanced at Batman beside her; such a task could only be done by the deceased's comrades, who were also from another world.
"I am sorry, given her status and achievements, she deserved a much more dignified and grand funeral."
By the standards of the Princess of Paradise Island, the funeral was far too brief and crude. There was no display of the body for mourners to pay their respects, nor a grand funeral procession that lasted for several days, accompanied by music and poetry recitations.
The times are extraordinary, with a major war looming ahead, so the funeral must be quick and simple, just as Diana had done for her mother Hippolyta during the war.
"Thank you, Queen of Paradise Island."
Batman, standing nearby, removed his Bat-Helmet and placed it to his side as a sign of mourning. In this moment, he decided to spend his final moments with his companions in his true form.
"This is already quite good. We all know that time is passing."
Bruce Wayne's weathered face now appeared calm and profound. This middle-aged man had just experienced the second worst day of his life a few days ago, and his whole world had once again slipped away from him.
Even so, the universe at this moment did not leave him any time for grief. One crisis after another came, making it hard to breathe.
The world's superhero has weathered almost every crisis in just one week, but Bruce knows that everything in the world has its limits.
The impending war between the Kryptonians and the Lightbringers has significantly exceeded the capacity of everyone on Earth to cope.
This world is gradually sliding into the abyss of destruction.
Batman, Bruce Wayne, would not allow this to happen.
His own world no longer exists, and the deeds of these fallen heroes will be forgotten along with the world itself, but Batman will remember.
Batman is one of the only two pieces of evidence that that world and those heroes ever existed.
So he must survive, he must survive with this world.
The first thing to do now is to send my Diana off on her final journey.
He cleared his throat and began his speech: "My Wonder Woman is a hero, and her story also began on Paradise Island..."
Diana listened to Batman's story and was almost immediately captivated.
At the beginning of the story, both Wonder Women left the secluded Paradise Island in pursuit of peace and hope.
She entered the world of men.
This "Wonder Woman" teams up with many heroes in her world to defeat powerful enemies such as Ares, Steppenwolf, the Dark Lord, and Doomsday.
Batman's hanging letter, though lengthy, was remarkably brief, ending quickly:
"She fought with love and peace in her heart, with kindness and respect for life, until the very end of her life."
There's no need to be sad for her, because she has already found her own truth.
After so many battles, Diana from another world achieved glory and accomplishments that the Wonder Woman of this world could hardly imagine.
However, Diana herself embarked on a path of destruction from the very beginning, nearly becoming the one who destroyed the entire world.
Wonder Woman almost inevitably yearns for the path of truth and justice that her counterpart from another world has taken.
"This isn't your fault; the world is at fault."
Joey, who was standing nearby, looked at Diana, who was lost in thought, and as if he could hear her thoughts, he patted her on the shoulder and offered words of comfort:
"Our past experiences and memories have shaped who we are today. This universe is cruel and unforgiving, and we, as beings within it, are not perfect, and there is nothing to be ashamed of."
"You're right, that's why I'll always support you. I'd die for you like another Diana."
Diana grasped the hand that had been withdrawn from her shoulder with both of her own, holding it solemnly in her palms. This man was unlike any other man in the world; he possessed not only immense strength but also a matching compassion.
"If either we or you survive this war, please make sure you build a truly perfect world according to your will."
"Don't say such discouraging things, Diana!"
With his right hand firmly held, Joey looked up and met Diana's gaze. He felt somewhat lost, realizing once again just how much hope his power could bring to people.
Wonder Woman once believed she could create a perfect world, but she failed, and now she is passing that hope on to herself.
Accompanying this supreme power is indeed an immense responsibility.
The burdens of both Earth and Tamaran now rest on their own shoulders.
Joey will work towards that goal, but he feels it's still necessary to make Wonder Woman understand that the word "perfect" itself implies imperfection:
"Diana, no one can create a perfect world. The best we can do is to make the world infinitely closer to perfection."
After a brief speech, Bruce subtly donned the Bat-Helmet, concealing the two lines of tears streaming down his face. He listened quietly to the interaction between Wonder Woman and Superman until Superman uttered those words, at which point he finally spoke in agreement:
"Superman is right."
This Superman is clearly not as young as he looks.
Superman and Wonder Woman, as two of the Justice League's Big Three, have always been key figures in the Justice League.
The two people in this world are clearly different from the two I know, and I need to observe them more carefully.
Wonder Woman, who once fought Aquaman and also used her sword against mortals, is definitely a dangerous character. And this younger version of Superman?
There are too many secrets.
For example, his unusually high resistance to Kryptonite and the Red Sun, and his knowledge that his alternate-world Batman is Bruce Wayne.
The Batman of this world is someone else entirely, and Bruce Wayne doesn't exist at all, even if he had X-ray vision.
When you see your own face, shouldn't your first reaction be that you're a younger version of Thomas Wayne?
Batman knew he shouldn't be lost in thought at the funeral of one of his closest allies, but the current situation made it impossible for him to stop thinking.
With the other heroes and many Amazons watching, Batman first returned the focus of the funeral to Diana: "Please."
Queen Diana of the Amazons stepped forward and personally covered Wonder Woman's eyes with two drachmas that had once been prepared for herself, thus providing the latter with the money for a ticket to the other side of the River Styx.
At her command, the coffin was carried by the Queen's personal guards, the "Nemesis," to the Amazons' burial ground, where Wonder Woman's soul would journey in flames to the Garden of Truth.
Batman looked at Superman in this world: "Joy Joseph Kent, are you from another world, like me?"
