Chapter 24: The Wedding
Chapter 24: The Wedding
Twenty minutes later, Yuan Xiu's makeup was finally finished.
She refused Sun Ying's offer to apply a large amount of eyeliner to her eye sockets with an eyebrow pencil. Instead, she used her finger to dab a little lipstick on her eyelids, adding a touch of charm to her lively eyes.
The lipstick was bright red, which Yuan Xiu applied herself. She put a dot of vermilion in the center of her lips and then blended it out little by little with her finger, giving her diamond-shaped lips a natural rosy glow.
Sister-in-law Xiulan was the first to praise it, "Oh my, it looks great! This makeup makes you look so beautiful, much better than the makeup you did for others before."
Sun Ying naturally wouldn't admit that her skills weren't good before. "That's different. I used to wear stage makeup, so I had to wear it heavily, otherwise the audience below wouldn't be able to see it."
She stared at Yuan Xiu's face carefully for a long time. "Sister Xiu, you're so beautiful!"
Yuan Xiu smiled and said, "You did a great job with my makeup."
Sun Ying was a little embarrassed. "I did my makeup exactly as you requested. If anyone asks me to do makeup for a bride in the future, I'll do it like this."
"What should I wear?"
Chunmei's sister-in-law arrived, along with her son Xiaojun.
"Come and see! My Xiaoying did Xiaoyuan's makeup, she looks so beautiful!" Sister Xiulan couldn't wait to pull Sister Chunmei into the house. "Xiaoyuan, turn around and let her see."
Yuan Xiu stood up, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Do I look alright?"
"That's fantastic!" Sister Chunmei's eyes lit up. "The clothes are beautiful, and the makeup is perfect. Xiaoying's skills are amazing! She's practically a master herself!"
Sun Ying couldn't stop smiling. "It's mainly because Sister Xiuxiu is beautiful."
"Aunt Xiu Xiu looks beautiful!"
As soon as Sun Ying finished speaking, Xiao Jun praised her loudly. After praising her, he shyly hid behind his mother. Not only that, but he also peeked out and gave Yuan Xiu a shy smile.
Yuan Xiu was amused by what she saw.
Sister Chunmei also brought breakfast. "I cooked this first thing this morning: a bowl of brown sugar water and two poached eggs. This is what they call a life as sweet as honey, a happy and fulfilling family reunion!"
"Thank you, sister-in-law, you're so kind."
Yuan Xiu never expected that her sister-in-law Chunmei would bring her a bowl of poached eggs. In their hometown, it's a custom for the bride to eat a bowl of poached eggs and glutinous rice balls on the day she leaves home. She thought she wouldn't get to eat them, but unexpectedly...
"It's not that I'm being thoughtful, it's that Xiao Jiang is. He specifically told me to do this yesterday." Sister Chunmei placed the lunchbox in Yuan Xiu's hands. "Eat up, and make a good life for yourselves with Xiao Jiang from now on."
Two plump poached eggs lay in the bright red sugar water, and Yuan Xiu's slightly dazed eyes were reflected in the clear sugar water. After a moment of stunned silence, she picked up the spoon that her sister-in-law Chunmei handed her and began to eat, bite by bite.
The poached egg was fragrant, and the sugar water was sweet. Yuan Xiu felt that this was the best poached egg in brown sugar water she had eaten since her parents passed away.
After Yuan Xiu finished eating, Sister Chunmei put the lunchbox into a mesh bag and had Xiao Jun carry it. "Is everything packed? I think it's about time. I estimate that Battalion Commander Jiang will be here to pick us up soon."
"Everything's all packed up, Xiao Yuan. Do you need to use the restroom? You might not have time later when things get busy," Sister Xiulan reminded him.
Yuan Xiu nodded, opened the door and walked out. Her gaze swept to the right of the stairwell, and she caught a glimpse of Yuan Juan's fleeting back.
The receptionist winked at Yuan Xiu and then gestured towards the second floor with her lip.
Yuan Xiu smiled, which was her way of telling her that Yuan Juan had been peeking.
After using the restroom, Yuan Xiu reapplied some lipstick.
A moment later, the receptionist came running over, "The wedding party has arrived, they've got ten bicycles!"
Sister Chunmei laughed and said, "They're here, they're here. Xiao Yuan, quickly sit down on the bed and wait for Xiao Jiang to come in and greet you."
Yuan Xiu sat down on the bed, and Jiang Zhou soon came in, followed by several unmarried young men, all dressed in military uniforms and wearing military caps.
Yuan Xiu's gaze fell on Jiang Zhou, and she felt that no one else looked as good in military uniform as him.
"The bride is so beautiful!"
The crowd cheered and pushed Jiang Zhou to Yuan Xiu's side.
Jiang Zhou looked at Yuan Xiu with a smile on his face that made it clear he was in a good mood.
His two sisters-in-law teased him, "Alright, stop looking, hurry up and bring your wife home!"
"Battalion Commander Jiang, quickly squat down and carry your wife on your back!"
"Yes, he carried his sister-in-law out!"
Amidst the commotion, Yuan Xiu's face flushed red; she hadn't expected Jiang Zhou to call so many people.
She thought that once she was all ready, Jiang Zhou would come to pick her up at the appointed time, and then the two of them would go home, have tea and some wedding candy with the guests, and that would be the end of the wedding.
Jiang Zhou turned his back to Yuan Xiu and squatted down by the bed.
Yuan Xiu didn't know what to do with her hands and feet. Was she really going to carry the load?
"Carry it! Carry it! Carry it!"
The noise was deafening.
Jiang Zhou turned his head slightly. "Come up."
Yuan Xiu blushed and carefully leaned against his strong back.
She could feel the muscles in his back tense up the moment she got close to him.
Then, in the next moment, her legs were hooked by a pair of strong hands, and her gaze was pulled upward as Jiang Zhou stood up with her on his back.
Amidst the cheers of the crowd, he easily carried himself on his back, passed the guests who had come with him, and exited the guesthouse.
Yuan Xiu only felt that she was smiling, but she didn't know how moving her expression was at that moment.
The receptionist was practically ecstatic, her eyes crinkling into crescent moons as she covered her mouth and stomped her feet, watching the newlyweds walk out of the guesthouse.
This was the first time she had ever seen someone get married from the guesthouse since she started working!
The unmarried young men who came with Jiang Zhou to pick up the bride were filled with envy and jealousy. "I want to get married too."
"I'd like to too. I'll ask my mom to arrange a blind date for me right away!"
Chunmei and her sisters, carrying Yuan Xiu's luggage, followed behind. Hearing this, they laughed, "Want to get a wife? Please, let your sisters-in-law introduce you to someone!"
"Sister-in-law, sister-in-law, please introduce me to someone. I don't have high requirements, just someone as pretty as the bride."
Chunmei's sister-in-law rolled her eyes at him with a smile, "Isn't this tall enough?"
"Sister-in-law, I'm not tall, so someone shorter than the bride is fine too."
"Get lost!" Chunmei's sister-in-law said with a laugh.
As soon as Yuan Xiu stepped outside, she saw ten bicycles parked side by side in front of the guesthouse, each adorned with a bright red flower.
It's just like back in the day when someone in the village bought a bicycle, tied a big red flower to it, and rode around the village in circles.
Yuan Xiu didn't know why she suddenly thought of this, and couldn't help but burst out laughing.
